World Of Warcraft Addiction Statistics

How addicting is compulsive video gaming (like World of Warcraft, online gaming),does it effect you negatively?

Looking for credible information for research, (such as studies, actual gamers, rehab facilities, statistics), or any information about the problems of addiction caused by playing video games.

I play warcraft and for a while I was “getting away” from my real life problems with the game. I was playing a LOT and not doing anything else outside of the house for a while. I ended up divorcing my husband (for other reasons) and as soon as I wasn’t with him anymore and was happy I reduced the amount of time I played WoW. Now I only play a few nights a week (sometimes I’ll go all week without playing) for a couple of hours to unwind after work. I am dating someone now who also likes video games but we go out on the weekends. I think it all depends on self-control. I don’t get upset or feel like I am missing the game now (but I used to when I was with my ex-husband and I wasn’t playing). It is a really fun game and I think the part that made me the most addicted was the people I met in the game. They became better friends to me then I think my real life friends were. Now though… I choose the friends I have outside of the game even though I still like to play the game.

If you think about it… a lot of other addictive things have been said to be used to “get away from problems” like drugs and alcohol, but all they do is create different problems. I suppose WoW was my drug for a while but now I’ve got it in check. I guess if I were to say it was like alcohol, I was a wowaholic for a while but I sobered up for a while and now I only play moderately for fun. :)
