The game has a inchat client but most people don’t use it because the quality is really poor so they have it turned off. Vent is what most people who play WoW use, the only person it cost money is the person who HOST the chat room. Most people who own their own Vent servers are people like guild leaders who use it to raid. Some people are generous and have public servers you and your friends can use, I would post on your realm forums asking if there are such ones out there.
