If you aren’t sure which professions to take as your primary professions, then a good choice in any way would be Mining. Why to choose mining? Mining is a great profession to have since it can accompany many other professions and it is even a need for them. Mining and Jewelcrafting are a great pair, Mining and Blacksmithing and Mining and Engineering as well. Mining also goes well with other gathering professions like Skinning or Herbalism, simply because you can grind ores, herbs or skin and sell it on the AH to make a profit.
How to start Mining?
For the start, each miner should know and obtain a few things. One such item is a mining pick, which can be purchased from any mining supplies vendor which is usually located right next to your mining trainer.
Mining veins are another necessary thing you will need to find. Same as with Herbalism, with Mining you will get “Find Minerals” ability. When this ability is activated it will show veins as yellow dots on your minimap. By using an add-on such as Gatherer, you can record locations where you have found certain ores. It would be also possible to store vein locations found by your guild or party members in possession of the same addon.
The most common places to look for veins are the mountain areas, hills and rocks. Depending on the area the level when it comes to veins will be higher/lower. The starting areas of all classes usually have Copper and Tin veins.
What do I get with Mining?
Mining comes with ability which is called Smelting. With the use of Smelting you will be able to create various metal bars from the ores you gathered. Players with this profession also get a lot of stones, motes, and gems while mining.
Mining and other professions
As mentioned before, Mining is popular because it is a good counterpart to some professions. Blacksmithing, Jewelcrafting and Engineering are all Mining – dependant. You can choose whatever pair of professions you like, however it is best that you pair up suitable and complementing ones, so you could level up your skill faster. Combo of Mining and Herbalism is said to be really good for making profit since you can just fly around the map and gather herbs and ores.
What are other benefits of Mining?
Mining is a useful and profitable profession and it is also a great profession for all classes that are in a need of extra health, such as Warriors, Paladins or Death Knights. With Mining you will get a special passive skill called Toughness. It also provides some additional stamina, which is particularly useful during leveling, while giving a huge bonus of +500HP (50 stamina) at a maxed out skill level. This is an ideal bonus for a tank.
Classes that most often decide to pick up Mining professions are Paladins and Warriors. Death Knights are a new Hero class which are also wearing plate and tanking, so they can make a good use of mining as well. Nevertheless, not only plate wearers decide to go for Mining. Other classes do it also if their second profession is either Jewelcrafting or Engineering.
