World Of Warcraft Lore Explained

can somebody explain to me what the outland is supposed to be in world of warcraft?

from the lore, it seems like it is a planet that the draenei flew away from

is it a planet? the sky looks like its cosmic like but im not sure i don’t really understand the lore lol. please explain

Lore-wise, it is the homeland of the Orcs. The Draenei were immigrants to Draenor (what we know as Outland now). The Draenei were trying to outrun the Burning Legion, and found a peaceful planet to settle on. They started calling it Draenor, and the Orcs adopted the name eventually.

The Orcs were a peaceful race also, until some of their leaders became corrupt due to the influences of the Burning Legion (the same ones the Draenei were running from). The Orcs became corrupt, and used dark magics which ended up draining the landscape of its beauty. Because they were corrupt with fel energy, they are now called Fel Orcs (they’re all over Hellfire Peninsula).

These Fel Orcs began invading Azeroth through the Dark Portal, and the Alliance fought back hard. They then went through the Dark Portal into Outland and saw what Ner’zhul had done, and how far his corruption had spread.

Because the Burning Legion wished the Fel Orcs to spread chaos and dark magic, Ner’zhul opened a great many portals to other destinations. Unfortunately, the magic and draw of all of these portals ripped Draenor apart– leaving shattered pieces of land floating in space.

This is how Outland was formed. This is also why the edges are so jagged, why there are floating bits of land out in the middle of the twisting nether, and why you can find portal frames in various places around Outland (Nagrand, Hellfire Peninsula, etc.).
