How to level a destruction Warlock. World of Warcraft?
I have a warlock, currently specced affliction, level 28. I love that I have no down time. But I’ve been looking at destruction warlocks and Im starting to like them more and more. So, how would I be off, leveling as a destruction lock. I’ve looked up a lot of builds, but I’m more so lost as how to play a destro lock. Thanks a lot.
Please, don’t listen to Destro haters. After all, that’s not what you’re asking, right? You want to know -how- to play a Destruction lock.
First of all, Destro will cause you a bit more downtime, and you have fewer escape mechanisms (no Curse of Exhaustion to kite with), but you will be using nukes, which kill your target faster than dots, so it’s a bit of a tradeoff.
At 28, if you’re looking to go Destro, here’s what I recommend for a starter build: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=IVMZZxx0k You may be asking yourself why you need 7 points in Affliction if you’re going destruction. Well, because they’re gangbuster talents, that’s why. Instant-cast corruption is the only way you’ll ever cast corruption. Also, improved Drain Soul will do two things:
1) Remind you to drain souls and keep your bags full of shards, because Destro is shard-intensive.
2) Refund you 15% of your maximum mana every time you drain a soul. This will help with your downtime.
Another benefit to imp drain soul is that you still get the maximum benefit of 15% mana return if you use rank 1 of the spell (minimum of mana output).
So, now that we’ve got those points established, Improved Shadow Bolt > Cataclysm. When maxed out, every crit you get with a shadow bolt will improve your damage done by shadow by 20%. This includes not just shadow bolts, but also corruption, curse of agony, and drain life. Bane is necessary for any destruction lock. Otherwise, things take way too long to be worth casting.
This brings us to Shadow Burn! A fantastic talent. Instant-cast, instant damage, and great for burning an excess of shards, or, getting a finishing move on a pvp target, or, finishing off a mob when you have more than 1 on you.
You should stock up on Stamina and Intellect for primary stats, (Int = more crits, Stam = more mana through life tap). Hotkey your life tap to something you will use often, and get your first aid up to a good speed. In a pinch, fear, lifetap, bandage, lifetap. You will be going through a lot of mana as a destro lock, but it will be fun.
Nuts and Bolts: Pull with a shadowbolt. As the mob’s running toward you, toss out an immolate. Curse of Agony as the mob reaches you, then either fear, shadowbolt again and drain soul, or shadowburn.
Since your nukes will be the strongpoint of your character, make sure that you use them to the best of your ability. When you get deeper into Destruction, you will get stronger crits, and your immolate will hurt more. Make sure you always have your dots up on a target when you’re in a group, and shadowbolt while they’re ticking. Remember, because your shadowbolts are the catalyst for stronger dots, they should always be strong in your rotations.
You at this point should travel with your imp out as a secondary caster (supplementary damage) for you. When you get to 30, do your felhunter quest, and send him in first to establish primary aggro, get tainted blood on your target (which makes them hit you for a smaller amount), and then start casting. You can really play with any pet, but you’ll be pulling aggro off of your voidwalker quickly, and the succubus can’t take a hit, so if you want her out, you’ll be tanking.
You can build your destro lock however you want to (obviously), but the point of it all is to have a good time, build strong nukes and nasty crits, and to enjoy what you do… so go out there and enjoy!
